Woods, with 20 goals and 18 assists last year, was taken by the Detroit Red Wings, who had first choice for $90,000. The Red Wings were forced to remove Jim Nahrgang from their protected list and Montreal preferred to take the cash. After Colorado passed, the Washington Capitals took forward Dave Forbes from the Boston Bruins for the waiver price of $12,500. The Capitals were forced to drop Peter Scamurra but the Bruins took the cash. After passes by Vancouver, Cleveland, Chicago and Minnesota, the New York Rangers took Toronto goalie Wayne Thomas for $12,500, dropping netminder Giles Gratton.
